Uber introduces PIN verification security feature

Uber has introduced a new PIN verification security feature in Canada and the United States.

The new edition of the app, which began rolling out on January 7th, will be available to every user by the end of this week, and will allow users to set up a PIN verification feature in their rideshare application. A rider can “opt-in” to the new PIN feature in the app’s settings, where you can tap “Verify Your Ride.” Then, a rider can decide whether they want the feature on every trip or only during nighttime trips, which take place between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.

Once the setting has been turned on, riders will get a four-digit pin code in their app as the driver makes their way to the user’s pickup location. When the driver arrives, the rider verbally provides the PIN before entering th car, and once the driver enters the proper PIN, the trip can begin. A trip cannot begin unless the correct PIN is entered into the driver’s app.

“We are constantly working and innovating to provide riders and drivers with the tools they need to help ensure a safe and reliable experience,” Uber head of safety products Sachin Kansal explains in a release. “This new feature will provide peace of mind that you are getting into the right vehicle.”
