Yesterday an anonymous Reddit user posted photos of what they believe to be an unreleased Sufjan Stevens album.
The scavenger explained their finding saying, “I used to work next door to Sufjan’s studio in Brooklyn. One day, while he was renovating the place, he threw a bunch of stuff into the building’s dumpster. I salvaged this…as far as I know, I don’t think it’s ever been released.”
Their post received much attention as the photos of the album called Stalker appears to be from 1998, which predates his first album A Sun Came (2000) by two years. Sufjan Stevens has released seven albums over his seventeen year career. This album would be his eighth.
The post received an official comment from Steven’s label Asthmatic Kitty Records, who couldn’t confirm or deny the legitimacy of the album. They did however ask that the person keep the records private.
“I’d say you have received a special gift. You’re hearing something only a few have ever heard. It’s a rare honor. I would rather you not share someone’s music without their permission; Sufjan or anyone else’s. If it was in the trash, there was a reason (most likely the expectation that it’d sit in a huge landfill outside of NYC). [Asthmatic Kitty Records] won’t send any ‘severe takedowns’ or legal notices. We don’t do that. Instead, I’m asking you, as someone who’s also had the special privilege of hearing unreleased music, to politely ask that you keep it to yourself.”
If you zoom in you can read the tracklist of Stalker. The titles reflect the album name, with some highlights being the tracks titled “Loneliness is a Warm Bum”, “Uh Oh Yeah Huh Er Um Baby” and “U Kan Wrun But You Kan’t Kyde.” You can find the full track list on Consequence of Sound.
As much as all of us here at Indie88 would love to hear these unreleased songs, we can also respect not wanting to publish early work. There’s a reason it was thrown out.
