John Prine and Al Bunetta started Oh Boy Records in 1981, which means its celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, a new documentary about the label is being released, and we’ve gotten a five-minute teaser.
The forthcoming documentary is set to feature rare archival footage, new interviews, details about the starting of the label, and more.
“Every time I’d go to a little concert hall or a club, I was filling it up,” Prine, who passed away from COVID-19 last year, explains of starting the label. “So I thought, ‘Why not make music just for those people.’ And that’s when I talked to Al about starting Oh Boy. I’m really proud of it. As time’s gone by and people starting independent record companies has kind of become the thing, it’s great that we’ve stayed afloat for this many years.”

Oh Boy will also be celebrating the anniversary with pop-up events, special 40th anniversary merch, new music from artists on their roster, and more.
Additionally, this year will be the 50th anniversary of Prine’s debut album, which will be reissued later this year.
