Watch: A video for the new alternate rendition of David Bowie’s ‘I Can’t Read’ has been released

The video for 'I Can't Read '97' was shot by Tim Pope

Parlophone Records has shared a video for a previously unreleased alternate rendition of “I Can’t Read” from 1997.

The track originally appeared on the 1998 debut album from Tin Machine, which was Bowie’s brief supergroup made up of Reeves Gabrels, Tony Fox Sales, and Hunt Sales.

“In the autumn of 1996, during the mixing stages for [1997’s] Earthling, Bowie re-recorded the track – which, at one stage, appeared on a mastered version of the album,” a press release explains. “While the song’s second incarnation ‘I Can’t Read ’97’ was Bowie’s preferred solo version, it was ultimately cut from Earthling and replaced at the last minute with ‘The Last Thing You Should Do.'”
