Following the release of her debut solo album Jaime, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard took to the stage at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a performance of “Stay High.”
The performance saw Howard snapping along to the groove-heavy tune as she delivered soulful, powerful vocal lines. Throughout the entirety of “Stay High,” Howard’s voice weaved in and out of dreamy falsettos and throaty croons with ease, bopping along to the bouncy instrumental line.
Howard recently took to the Thao Nguyen-hosted podcast Song Exploder to discuss the making of “Stay High.” “I knew immediately [the lyrics] were supposed to juxtapose how dreamy and playful and innocent and childlike the music was, like, to me the music is like sunlight,” Howard explains of the track. “And then I wanted for the lyrics to sound more corrupted like the voice that’s speaking has lived life.”
