Watch: Danny Carey honours Rush’s Neil Peart during Tool’s 2020 Grammy acceptance speech

Tool took home the award for Best Metal Performance

Tool won Best Metal Performance at the 2020 Grammy Awards on Sunday, and during the band’s acceptance speech, Tool drummer Danny Carey paid tribute to the late Rush band member Neil Peart.

Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor took to the stage to accept the award for their Fear Inoculum track “7empest” during the non-televised Grammy pre-ceremony prior to the main award show. “It kind of renews my faith in humankind to know there’s long attention spans out there who can listen to a 12-minute song,” Carey said while accepting the award. Carey then thanks all of his bandmates, his wife, and the “drum gods” who came before him.

“As artists, we’re all influenced by the people that come before us,” Carey said. “For me, it’s all the great drum gods … and I do my best to channel them every time I’m working. Namely, John Bonham, Tony Williams, and recently my good friend Neil Peart. This is for all of you guys.”
