The Tragically Hip frontman and activist Gord Downie received the Order of Canada today, the second highest honour a Canadian citizen can be awarded (next to the Order of Merit).
Fans have been petitioning for Downie to win the prestigious award, and today their wished have come true.
Downie was recognized for his leadership in supporting issues related to the indigenous population and residential school. The singer announced early last year his terminal brain cancer diagnosis and has spent his time since just as dedicated to making a difference.
Downie’s Tragically Hip bandmates, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair, Johnny Fay and Paul Langois will also receive the Order of Canada, but at a later date.
