HAIM have released a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video for their new track, “Hallelujah.”
The new song, which was co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr., is a tribute to Alana Haim’s friend Sammi Kane, who passed away at age 20. “It was a loss that changed my life forever,” Alana explains in a statement. “Sammi was my everything, and coming to terms with the fact that she wasn’t here, that I couldn’t call her, I couldn’t hug her, I would never see her bright smile and sparkling eyes ever again broke me.”
Este Haim also released a statement about writing the track, explaining that “to me it’s a song about relying on the people around you and reflecting on how different life could be if those people weren’t around.” The accompanying clip is powerful in its starkness, as the sisters perform the track in a dark, desolate theatre, supporting each other through the pain-ridden lyricisim.
