New fans of Jack White related projects might not be aware but Jack White has been a drummer for a very long time. The first instrument he ever played was drums back in the first grade, so it’s no question he’s comfortable being behind the kit for his most recent work with The Death Weather.
As part of the press relating to their new album Dodge and Burn, Jack White directed a 10 minute long drum tutorial. Though it doesn’t go into detail on a technical level, White gives a rundown on his particular drum kit and a general rundown on the importance of a drummer. The Ludwig kit he uses was designed during his work with Alicia Keys for the Bond film Quantum of Solace, and has pretty unconventional dimensions.
Sitting in the goofy, White style set, he quips “I’m the one sitting down back here, okay, I’m the one checking in every morning at 7:30, while Alison [Mosshart] is fast asleep,”reffing to the band’s lead singer. “I’m the one doing the grunt work; I’m the guy back here in the trenches, you know. I’m hitting the boom-booms, make the scrilla.”
The rundown is followed up with a performance of the band’s “Hang You From the Heavens,” a track which he demonstrates in his tutorial.
