Watch: Japanese Breakfast Shares Retro-Futuristic Video for New Song

It's 80s pop bliss

Japanese Breakfast is the solo project of Michelle Zauner, which began after the breakup of her former band Little Big League. In 2016 she released her debut record Psychopomp, and July 14th will see the release of new record Soft Sounds From Another Planet.

Along with the album announcement, she’s shared “Machinist,” which has a retro and galactic feel. Her vocals levitate outside the ISS as the hazy pop song and auto-tuned vocals fly in zero gravity.

In a press release, she described the track as “a sci-fi narrative about a woman who falls in love with a robot.” In the self-directed video, Zauner explains “she hallucinates on rocket fuel and tears apart her spaceship in an attempt to build a body for her robot lover.” Director of Photography, Adam Kolodny, says they “were inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, 2046, and The Fifth Element.”
