After years of development, a sequel to the 1996 film Space Jam is set to arrive. LeBron James steps in to replace Michael Jordan, teaming up with Bugs Bunny and Co. to battle the “goon squad” on the animated hardcourt in an effort to rescue his son.
Space Jam: A New Legacy also stars Don Cheadle, Zendaya, all your favourite Loony Tunes characters, and a who’s who of Warner Bros. intellectual property.

Warner Bros. are really unloading the vault on this one, with appearances from the likes of The Iron Giant (nostalgia!), King Kong (cool!), Mad Max war boys (ok?!), various Batman villains (sure!), and the droogs from A Clockwork Orange (problematic!).
Depending on your vintage, the original Space Jam may be considered one of the all-time great animated crossover flicks… or if you trend closer to Gen-X you may just view it as silly pop-culture team-up that kept your children entertained for a spell in the ’90s. Whatever the case, it’s sure to rake in some dollars at the box office and on the VOD front.
A sequel to the original film has been rumoured since the late ’90s, but only went into development in 2014 after James attached himself to the project. Malcolm D. Lee (Roll Bounce, Scary Movie 5) serves as director, while Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) is a producer.
Space Jam: A New Legacy hits theatres and HBO Max on July 16.
