El-P and Killer Mike have just shared a short documentary for their cat-remix album Meow The Jewels, a Kickstarter-funded project with the goal to donate to charity.
The four minute doc shares how the idea started, and details what every cent raised from the Kickstarter campaign will be allotted to. The campaign surpased the $40,000 goal, reaching $65,783. Being split between the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner’s, the money will go towards the charity of their choosing.
Killer Mike talks about the illusion of a divide when it comes to the issue on hand, saying “when you think about the donations that came in for Run The Jewels, you have to know that at least half to 75% came in from young white American. Thank you guys out there,” he continued, “because that’s some very cool shit. It dispels the mythology that there are two teams in America and that we gotta choose one.”
The remaining balance from the campaign will go to the National Lawyers Guild’s Mass Defense Committee, “a network of lawyers, legal workers, and law students providing legal support for political activists, protesters and movements for social change” as their Kickstarter page explains.
