The new indie rocker is an intentionally rough, rowdy cut that sees Carrie Brownstein taking lead vocals. With wailing guitar solos and swaggering, mellow vocals, this track is quintessential Brownstein. The accompanying Lance Bangs-directed lyric video is just as gritty as the track, with stylized, mostly black-and-white effects.
On the surface level, Brownstein presents a love song, singing over and over again, “It’s a love song.” As you dive deeper it’s about the struggle to properly communicate affection, with lyrics like, “I’m sorry, I’m singing about love/ And it sounds like hate.
