Watch: Sonic Youth recruit J Mascis for cover of The Stooges in previously unseen 1987 video

Sonic Youth unearthed a performance at a Forced Exposure benefit

Sonic Youth have unearthed a previously unreleased 1987 video, which sees them covering The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with guest guitarist J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.

The video is from a Forced Exposure benefit at Boston’s The Rat on May 9th, 1987, where Sonic Youth delivered an impromptu set with borrowed instruments, performing as surprise guests. Sonic Youth borrowed the gear from Dredd Foole and the Din, who had played just before them.

In addition to the cover of “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” which featured Kim on lead vocals, Sonic Youth also performed a cover of Crime’s “Hot Wire My Heart” during the set.
