In honour of renowned singer-songwriter John Prine, who passed away on Tuesday at age 73 from COVID-19 complications, we have resurfaced a session we filmed at Wayhome in 2017, which saw The Dirty Nil covering Prine’s “Sweet Revenge.”
Prine, whose wife Fiona also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in March, was tested as a precaution, but his early tests came back “indeterminate” before his condition worsened last weekend.
The Dirty Nil’s cover of Prine’s “Sweet Revenge” sees the band taking more of a country twist as frontman Luke Bentham performs solo, strumming the guitar and adding a little twang to his gritty vocals. The powerful rendition sees Bentham performing in a wooded area, delivering Prine’s famous lyrics like, “I got kicked off Noah’s ark/ I turn my cheek to unkind remarks/ There was two of everything/ But one of me.”

Rest In Peace, John Prine. You will be missed.
