The National performed at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston last night, where they paid tribute to late musician Daniel Johnston with a mash-up of their own track “I Am Not in Kansas” and Johnston’s “Devil Town.”
The indie rockers used the performance to honour the celebrated singer, who passed away from a heart attack at 58-years-old. “That was for Daniel Johnston, who left us,” frontman Matt Berninger tells the audience after the track. “And we’re still here.”
The intimate performance saw frontman Matt Berninger crooning atop a stripped back instrumental line alongside back up vocals from Kate Stables, Hannah Georgas, and Kyle Resnick.
