Watch: The National’s Matt Berninger covers Mercury Rev’s ‘Holes’ from home for ‘Colbert’

After announcing he's working on a solo album called 'Serpentine Prison'

After announcing he’s working on a solo album called Serpentine Prison, The National frontman Matt Berninger was the musical guest on the most recent taped-from-home version of Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show.

During the performance, Berninger didn’t sing a solo track, but rather, he covered Mercury Rev’s 1998 psych rock hit, “Holes.” Berninger’s cover of the Deserter’s Songs track recently was featured on a 7-inch single to benefit Planned Parenthood. His performance on Colbert truly allowed his vocals to shine with minimal instrumentation, as he crooned the iconic lines.
