Watch: The Rentals unveil video for new track ‘Great Big Blue’

'Q36' is set for release on June 2, 2020

The Rentals have released a video for their new track “Great Big Blue,” which is a song based on the Challenger disaster.

Frontman Matt Sharp wrote the song in honour of the fallen Space Shuttle Astronauts. The inspiration for the track came after Sharp accidentally discovered a video of raw, uncut CNN news footage that showed families of the seven astronauts as they watched the take-off, and the tragic aftermath that ensued.

“The scope of emotions, in those images, absolutely has had a profound impact on me,” Sharp explains. “As the camera moves across these beautiful, colourful faces, all glowing with pride and joy; beaming with the optimism from the limitless potential of their children, the camera operator captured the best of what we can experience in this life. Then suddenly that joy fades into a haze of uncertainty and confusion; ultimately morphing into the horror and the worst of what we face in the human experience.”
