Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has dropped a new solo album titled ANIMA alongside a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed short film by the same name.
The 9-track long album travels between beat-driven, rhythm-heavy anthems and dreamier grooves with moody instrumental lines. The doom-predicting lyrics sees Yorke not just looking at the inevitable forthcoming end of the world, but actually suggesting that it may be here already. From broken futures to what’s been lost as humanity has progressed, Yorke’s album tackles complex themes that truly illustrate what it means to live in 2019.
The accompanying one-reeler premiered on Netflix today, and it serves as a 15-minute long clip featuring “Not the News,” “Traffic,” and “Dawn Chorus” from ANIMA. The short, which was filmed in Prague and Les Baux-de-Provence, stars Yorke himself, and features some elaborate choreography by the artist’s Suspiria collaborator, Damien Jalet. Yorke’s partner, Dajana Roncione, also co-stars in the short.
