Toronto slack rockers PACKS are readying their debut album, Take The Cake, which is set for release on May 21st via Fire Talk and Royal Mountain, and today they’ve shared a video for their new track, “New TV.”
The gritty new tune comes packed with droning guitars and a driven drum beat, as frontwoman Madeline Link delivers a captivating drawl. The accompanying video follows Link watching herself on TV, taking over billboards, bus stops, and signs around the world as she performs along to the tune.
“I got the chance to witness a craigslist transaction of two bros selling a hideos pink couch to an eager young man with a U-HAUL,” Link explains. “As they lovingly demonstrated the LA-Z-BOY function, everyone seemed pretty impressed. New TV boxes and old couches litter curbs every garbage day. This song goes out to other people’s garbage.”

“The album is a meeting of old and new,” Link explains of Take The Cake. “Old songs from a year ago where I’m having really horrifyingly awful days at work, getting doored while biking in Toronto and flying into the middle of the street, or going on dates with guys who I’m either instantly in love with, or who end up creeping me out a bit. Those songs are more packed with that feeling of hurtling-through-time-and-space-at-breakneck-speed, manic energy. The newer songs are infused with a foggier, slower-paced disillusionment, and deal with the strangeness of a reality morphing before my eyes every day. I still try to be optimistic obviously, but these songs are really glorified coping mechanisms.”
