Toronto-based Polish-Canadian artist Zosia Mackenzie has shared a video for her new track as Szaio, “W Naszym Domu.” The song comes from her forthcoming album, Obraz, which translates to Portrait and will be released on May 14th, 2021.
The new song was initially made in her grandmother’s attic in Warsaw, before Mackenzie returned to Toronto and recorded “W Naszym Domu” with her partner John O’Regan in their home studio. The accompanying black-and-white video sees Mackenzie in that same home, dancing along to the catchy, synth-based track.
“My partner John O’Regan and I played an early demo of W Naszym Domu for our cinematographer, Daniel Katz, while working on a feature film together in Tofino,” Mackenzie explains of the video. “At the time, we were barely even planning to release the song, let alone make a music video, but Daniel loved the music and was insistent we shoot something together. I took some convincing but eventually agreed, so we decided to meet in Warsaw, where John and I were already planning on traveling to visit my grandmother. Sadly, however, she passed away the very same night we were flying in from Toronto and I never got the chance to see her again.”

“Her passing was incredibly emotional for everyone in my family, but after some time, I felt it would be an appropriate tribute to shoot the video at our family’s house in Warsaw’s Mokotów district, which is also where I’d originally written the song,” Mackenzie adds. “The lyrics are about witnessing her courage in fighting illness in her final years and my wishing we could both dance again together in our house. I’ve dedicated my forthcoming record in her memory and very much hope those who listen will find a positive space for themselves within my music.”
