Watch: Witch Prophet celebrates the power of Black women with new video for ‘MAKDA’

Witch Prophet has shared a new video for “MAKDA,” which celebrates the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba and the power of Black women and mothers.

The track is from Witch Prophet’s 2020 Polaris Music Prize Shortlisted album, D.N.A Activation. The Leah Vlemmiks-directed video for “MAKDA” comes packed with stunning, powerful, portrait-style clips of Black women, interspersed with shots of Witch Prophet singing along to the track.

“‘MAKDA’ is a song named after my sister as well as the Queen of Sheba,” Witch Prophet explains. “It’s about stepping into your power, as well as the strength, resiliency and beauty of the Black woman. It’s also a reminder to those that try to take advantage of us that we are in charge and always have been.”

“‘MAKDA’ is a celebration of the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba and the power of Black women and mothers told through dance and documentary,” Vlemmiks explains of the video. “Made in collaboration with dancer and choreographer, Esie Mensah, ‘MAKDA’ mixes powerful movement with rich visuals that celebrate Witch Prophet’s ancestral history and the women in her life that inspire her.”
