Where to Find Toronto’s Best Non-Beef Burgers

Kick your taste buds into high gear with this salivating menu of sandwiches that skimp on the beef, but never on the flavour. If vegetarian is your game, or chuck just ain’t your name, these standbys will surely become your new best friends.

Know of any other alternates? Be sure to add your faves to the comments below.

Completo | 5 Coady Ave.

Completo is a jewel of a spot, tucked away behind the bustling hustle of Queen Street East. Hungry travelers, who are able to bypass the numerous bars that pepper the neighbourhood, will be blessed to arrive at the doors of this Chilean oasis. The reward? A mouthwatering house-made black bean and chickpea patty, deep-fried and garnished with mashed avocado, sunflower sprouts and more.

Burger’s Priest | Various Locations

Given their extensive not-so-secret menu, BP is fairly well equipped, and seemingly happy, to whip up just about anything you can imagine between two buns. For a company that prides itself on its approach to traditional beef, the holier-than-thou veggie burger is quite outstanding.

Joey | Various Locations

For a chain restaurant typically found attached to upmarket shopping malls, the veggie burger at Joey is surprisingly solid. The patty is a fantastic mix of organic brown rice, almonds and mushrooms, topped with pickles, sprouts and savoury miso dressing.

Greenwood Smokehouse BBQ | 673 Danforth Avenue.

For those brave enough to walk into a BBQ joint and order a meatless sandwich, first off: well done. Second, you must try Greenwood’s mushroom burger—smoked to perfection and topped with eggplant and pineapple guacamole.

GAME Meats

Real Mo-Mo’s | 51 Colborne Street

For a real meal, check out Real Mo-Mo’s and their game-changing game burger. Bison, topped with goat cheese, pickled onions, mustard aioli and tomatoes served fresh on a warm pretzel bun.

Woody’s Burgers | 3795 Lakeshore BLVD West + 383 Jane St.

Another amazing bison burger—only this one comes bare, and you get to dress up any way you see fit! With great power comes great responsibility.

Bannock | 401 Bay Street

If you’re down for some hardcore Canadian comfort food, you had better make the chef at Bannock your new BFF. According to most, the greatest turkey burger in the 416 comes off the grille at this centrally located spot.

Beast | 96 Tecumseth Street

With a delectable array of biscuit sandwiches, all of which feature a generous portion of fried chicken thigh, Beast is a fantastic alternative for burger fans. Ornately decorated with gourmet ingredients like house kimchi, pimento cheese or kecap manis (even brunch crowds can throw a fried egg into the mix), these stackable bites are a little bit of heaven.

b.good | Various Locations

Healthy fast food is not an oxymoron. Natural, local hand-formed turkey burgers, along with a plentiful list of green sides, make this multi-chained family too good to b true.
