Officials from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will be hand-dropping rabies vaccines in and outside of the GTA, specifically Brantford, Kitchener, Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, and Burlington. The vaccines will be flavoured baits that target rabies-prone wildlife, such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes.
The baits will be packaged in a label that reads “Do Not Eat” and a toll-free number to a rabies information hotline. Officials ask that humans do not tamper with these baits and just leave them be when found. These vaccines will not immunize pets, and the public is asked to not try and find them with their pets. These baits are not for human consumption, and if accidentally consumed it is recommended to contact a doctor.
Vaccines will also be dropped via an aircraft in eastern and southern Ontario to target remote areas, such as forests that are not accessible by foot.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, 288 cases of rabies were confirmed in Ontario in 2016.
