Will Smith has shared a first trailer for a dramatic reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Bel-Air came as a result of a viral spoof trailer from Kansas City filmmaker Morgan Cooper. The clip reimagined the beloved ’90s sitcom as a modern drama. Smith saw the clip and hired Cooper to co-write and direct an episodic series based on the idea. Smith is an executive producer on the project.
“Because Bel-Air is a drama, we’re able to really peel back the layers of these characters and themes in a way that you simply couldn’t do 30 years ago in the half-hour sitcom format,” Cooper explains. “We’re able to go have tough conversations that challenge perspectives. At its core, Bel-Air is a celebration of the Black experience through the perspective of a family.”

The series is set to star Jabari Banks as Will with Adrian Holmes as Uncle Phillip Banks and Cassandra Freeman as Aunt Vivian Banks. Olly Sholotan will play Carlton Banks, Coco Jones is Hilary Banks, Akira Akbar is Ashley Banks, and Jimmy Akingbola is Geoffrey.
The first three episodes of Bel-Air premieres on Peacock on February 13th. New episodes will then air weekly.
In November of 2020, the cast of Fresh Prince took part in a reunion special.
“You’ve probably seen the picture, me with the whole Fresh Prince cast…but you’re not ready for this trailer. You couldn’t be ready for this trailer! Happy Thanksgiving, yes, you’re welcome Will,” Smith says in a trailer for the special, which you can watch here.
