Speaking with reporters shortly after it was announced that Kanye West would perform at the Pan Am closing games, John Tory told the press he was happy with the decision, as Kanye is a “proud product” of the industry here. Kanye is of course very much American, which sparked some intense debates about the decision.
Take a look at Tory’s blooper below:
Tory, as you can imagine isn’t the most loyal Yeezus fan, which he pointed out in his comments:
“I won’t say that I spend every single night at home listening to his music, but you know what, I’m smart enough to know that a lot of people do and I’m smart enough to know that he’s a proud product of our music industry here, as are a number of others.”
He later corrected himself, after a staffer filled him in. “I also wish I’d known he wasn’t a Canadian but I didn’t. That’s fine. You can’t know everything”. While it is funny, we should give the mayor a bit more credit. He’s been working hard at improving Toronto as a music city; trying to make permits easier to obtain, courting major music festivals to come and trying to arrange workarounds for pesky city bylaws. Can you really blame the guy for making a mistake. He’s pretty darn proud of the Toronto Music scene, so let’s just agree to call it a case of happy optimism. He genuinely thought one of the worlds biggest stars was Toronto based. That’s a compliment people, take it.
