With Ruby Rose departed, ‘Batwoman’ will introduce new identity for title character

Batwoman was the first superhero TV show to feature an LGBTQ lead character

Ruby Rose is gone, and it’s just Batwoman who remains.

Following the surprise announcement of actor Ruby Rose’s departure from the CW’s Batwoman, the show will move in a completely new direction with its title character next season. Kate Kane will hang up her cape and cowl altogether, in favour of a new hero: Ryan Wilder.

Deadline reports:

“Per the casting notice, first reported by Decider, Ryan is ‘likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed’ and ‘nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.'”

“A former drug-runner, the now-reformed and sober Ryan lives in her van with her plant and is a highly skilled but wildly undisciplined fighter. Like her predecessor, Ryan is an out lesbian, with performers who identify as LGBTQ encouraged to submit for the role.”
