Each week we feature five remarkable songs you need to hear on Your First Listen. In case you miss them on air, you can catch up on the weekly tracks right here. Your First Listen airs weekdays at 12:45pm, 5:45pm, and 8:45pm.
Elle King – “Ex’s and Oh’s”
Elle King is an artist out of the States and takes her musical cues from Americana, soul and blues music. She’s toured with big bands like Of Monsters & Men and Train, and opened for Ed Sheeran all before even releasing her debut album! It will be called Love Stuff and it comes out February 17th. One other fun fact? Elle King’s full name is Tanner Elle Schneider – and her dad? Actor Rob Schneider. She even acted with him as a kid in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. The more you know!
Dan Mangan + Blacksmith – “Mouthpiece”
January 13th is the day you can pick up the new album from Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, called Club Meds. From what we’ve heard so far, it’s a little darker, and a little more intense than what Dan’s done before. I got to see him perform this new one this summer at a festival in Elora and it was wild. Seeing them play, you’d have to agree his backing band Blacksmith clearly deserve the love they’re getting.
Spoon – “Inside Out”
Spoon’s eighth album They Want My Soul came out earlier this year after four years of silence. The second track on that album is a dreamy, gravity-defying track called Inside Out – a slow burner that will hook into your brain and stick with you.
Operators – “Start Again”
Former Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs frontman Dan Boeckner has been keeping busy since those bands ended, both with a collaboration with Spoon frontman Britt Daniels called “Divine Fits” and this band, Operators. “Start Again” is from their first EP, fittingly named EP1.
Jack White – “I Think I Found the Culprit”
White’s most recent album Lazaretto has snagged him three grammy nominatins, including Best Alternative Album of the Year. He just released a third single from that album, “I Think I Found the Culprit.”
